All About Bass Blockers

What are Bass Blockers?

Bass Blockers are typically used in car audio applications where small speakers are being powered from a full range amplifier. Bass Blockers significantly reduce audible distortion and speaker damage caused by excessive bass. They are especially useful with small diameter speakers and tweeters such as those located in the passenger door and dash of an automobile. By smoothly attenuating low audio frequencies, Base Blockers allow the full potential of an audio system to be realized.

Bass Blockers are typically installed in-line with the positive speaker lead. See figure 1 below.

Bass Blockers can be installed at any location between the audio head end / amplifier and speaker. However, the blocker should be installed in the positive side cable to avoid any potential grounding loop problems.

The Bass Blocker is simply wired in series with the speaker connection. This connection can be made by cutting the positive speaker wire and using a butt splice to connect the blocker inline. The head end or amplifier wiring harness is an ideal location for the Bass Blockers to be installed. The butt splice connectors should be crimped using a standard crimp tool designed for insulated connectors.

If you don't want to use the butt connector, cut the speaker lead at a convenient location, then insert the unit on the positive speaker lead and insulate the connections. Bass blockers are not directional, so the orientation of the Bass Blockers on the positive speaker leads is not important. The Bass Blocker should be tied to a solid support using a wire tie.
